This outline of the UK and US examinations available to students studying English as a Foreign Language. These would be of interest to individuals over for a course of at least two weeks duration, and the options available to them depend upon the time of year they arrive (as can be seen).

Results attainable:

The General English Examination of the Cambridge is well known and respected internationally and results in a comprehensive qualification of all main language skills. However, they are only held twice a year - mid-June and mid-December; results take 8/10 weeks to be forwarded.

The ARELS, IELTS, TOEIC and LCCI examinations can be arranged far more flexibly and the results are out far more quickly: for most written exams 2/3 weeks, and in the case of TOEIC - 3 days!

Students would be advised on which examination / qualification is the most appropriate for them to select in the light of their present attainment level and their objectives in studying English.
